Static vs Dynamic Websites The Differences & What you need

Should I Want a Static or Dynamic Website: The Differences Simplified for Clients.

One of the most asked questions just before our clients decide to let us build their websites, is whether we’ll build them a static or dynamic website. The answer is always “We only build Dynamic websites” and that’s true, while we can also make you a static website, no client has need for a static website when they can have a dynamic one.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the two types of website creation, and why you may need one over the other.

What is are static website?

These are basically just webpages containing fixed information that requires no interaction with the website users/visitors.

  • Static websites will most likely be written in plain HTML and complimented with CSS to add some style to it.
  • They usually have 3 – 5 webpages without functionality (Interaction) what so ever.

If you have a small business down street and just want to create awareness of your services, your static website for instance could have 5 pages including: Home, About Us, Our Services, Testimonials and Contact Us.

What is a Dynamic Website?

This is the fun type of website creation. It involved user interaction, frequent change in content or positioning, conditional functionality and a lot more.

Below are some of the most common dynamic website behaviors;

  • Usually have User/visitor generated content like comments, written posts among others.
  • Always consist of a data base to which the generated or stored data has to be retrieved from
  • Dynamic websites will always have a back-end where permitted users can add, change and monitor the website activity.
  • Dynamic websites will always be written in a scripting language like PHP or java script. Which then automatically generates temporary HTML for the browsers to read.

Examples of dynamic websites include: All social networks like Facebook, Linked in and Twitter, All Video Steaming websites like YouTube, Vimeo and Dailymotion, All blogging websites like Blog spot, WordPress, medium etc.

Dynamic websites are pretty much the most fun websites on the internet by far, and you will need a website developer rather than a designer to have it done correctly.

Static websites may also have a little dynamism, for instance a contact form where the user can type their information in order to make an inquiry that is automatically sends the users information to the website owner’s email address.
